Welcome to the latest edition of the Wosler Quarterly Newsletter! As we enter a new quarter, we are excited to share significant updates and insights about our mission to revolutionize healthcare. In this first issue, we reflect on the whole year of successes in 2023.
A Word from the CEO
As we navigate through another year at Wosler, Our journey continues to be a testament to our unwavering commitment to improving healthcare accessibility and efficiency.
The challenges in healthcare labour availability, particularly in diagnostic services, have never been more evident than in recent times. The COVID-19 pandemic amplified the need for innovative solutions that transcend physical boundaries. At Wosler, we recognized this need and embarked on a mission to bridge the gap.
Our flagship solution, the SonoSystem, stands as a symbol of our dedication to transforming healthcare. It represents the culmination of our collective efforts to provide patients, regardless of their location, with access to high-quality diagnostic services. With the SonoSystem, we eliminate the constraints of geography and time, allowing us to reach remote communities and provide efficient care.
This year, financing the R&D of the SonoSystem remained the single most significant challenge for us. However, the added revenue from expanded clinical operations proved to be a valuable asset this year to our R&D efforts.
As we expand and open new clinics, we do so with a sense of purpose and responsibility. Each clinic not only represents an opportunity to improve lives and make healthcare more accessible to those who need it most but also serves as a catalyst for the growth of the SonoSystem.
Our journey is not one taken alone. We owe a significant part of our success to our valued partners, collaborators, investors, excellent technologists, and the rest of our dedicated team at Wosler. Together, we are pushing the boundaries of what is possible in healthcare.
This year, we also welcomed a new member to our board, Dr. Neil Isaac FRCPC, who has already proved an invaluable asset. Dr. Isaac is the CEO of York Radiology Consultants, in Toronto and will provide guidance and insight as we grow.
Looking ahead, we remain committed to our vision of a future where healthcare knows no boundaries. We will continue to invest in research and development, forge strategic partnerships, and empower our team to deliver excellence in healthcare solutions.

New Clinics
Since April, only 8 months ago, we are thrilled to announce the opening of new Wosler clinics in Melville, Onion Lake, Shellbrook, Lloydminster, Kamsack and Meadow Lake. This brings Wosler’s operational clinics to a total of 9, surpassing our initial goal of 8. These expansions bring us closer to our goal of making high-quality diagnostic services accessible to all. While some of these locations are low-volume locations, they help contribute much-needed revenue and clinical intelligence for R&D and will serve as the first deployment site for the SonoSystem.
A Word from the COO
As we approach the end of another successful year, I am thrilled to share with you the remarkable strides we've made in operational excellence and efficiency, all of which contribute to our unwavering commitment to delivering top-quality healthcare services.
Operational Efficiency:
We recently implemented Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software to seamlessly manage requisitions from our esteemed healthcare provider partners and this has significantly improved our processes. We've successfully reduced appointment duplications, accelerated requisition triaging, and enhanced overall client service. This not only streamlines our workflow but allows us to see more patients by removing the bottleneck in patient scheduling, ensuring that we consistently deliver prompt services.
In our ongoing quest for efficiency, we've upgraded our phone system, addressing concerns of a long time in queues and missed calls from our valued patients and clients. This has allowed us to manage all incoming, ongoing and outgoing calls and has resulted in decreased wait times, fewer missed calls, and enhanced call handling. Moreover, the new system allows us to track analytics, providing valuable insights into our performance metrics—such as call volumes, handling rates, and time in queue.
Key Performance Indicator (KPI) Tracking:
We've diligently tracked our KPIs including but not limited to requisition handling, call handling, and clinical performance daily, utilizing the data to monitor and make necessary interventions when needed. This proactive approach empowers us to enhance operational decisions and continually improve our service delivery.
Clinic Performance Monitoring:
With operations spanning nine locations in Alberta and Saskatchewan, we've not only maintained consistent growth but have also intervened swiftly when issues arise. Our data-driven approach enables us to track our performance daily, weekly, and monthly, fostering a culture of continuous improvement. The success displayed in the chart below reflects our collective dedication to excellence.
Sonographer Recruitment and Clinic Expansion:
This year, we've expanded our clinics to nine, with plans for further growth. Managing this expansion required us to continuously recruit more sonographers. We've been exploring opportunities in all Canadian provinces and internationally. Moreover, we have built a good relationship with sonography colleges, such as MCG College, which will assist us in future recruitment.
Continuous Improvement Initiatives:
In our pursuit of excellence, we are exploring new avenues for performance tracking and KPI analytics. By leveraging this data, we aim to make informed decisions that will not only enhance revenue generation but also contribute to the sustained success of our clinics.
Gratitude and Recognition:
I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to our technology (Ontario) team for their invaluable support during the phone system upgrade. Special thanks to our dedicated Medical Office Assistants, Sonographers, and Medical Radiation Technologists for their unwavering commitment to providing exceptional service. Recognition is also due to our partners across various teams—from billing to advertising to our contractors and Dmitry—for their contributions in making Wosler's operations a resounding success.
We also extend our gratitude to our hardworking radiologists (Dr Maraj, Dr Al-Nakshabandi, Dr Isaac, Dr Margau, Dr Tunis and our new addition Dr Tynan) for their integral role in ensuring quality patient care and service.
As we reflect on the achievements of the past year, let us carry this momentum into 2024, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and excellence.

Summits, Events and Business Development Activities
We went to Chicago for the RSNA conference, where we not only presented the findings from our second usability study, but also networked with diagnostic ultrasound OEM manufacturers, and showcased our innovations. While in Chicago, we also performed multiple ultrasound scans of our phantom in London, ON. We are currently in exciting partnership discussions with some of the top Ultrasound companies that we met at the conference.
The Technology team also visited Haply Robotics Headquarters, in Montreal, QC where they participated in a showcase, exposing the technology to leading members of the Canadian Space Agency and other major government funding groups. We showed our abilities to haptically control the robot over long distances, and to highlight the potential for haptics-enabled telerobotics and the plethora of applications it can provide value.
Looking forward, we also plan to attend the Arab Health Conference in Dubai next year. This is a conference with over 100,000 visitors. We intend to form additional partnerships with local vendors, government agencies, and investors.

A Word from the CTO
Reflecting on the groundbreaking achievements of 2023 necessitates a brief look back at the pivotal successes of 2022. The year began with Canada’s first nationwide haptic ultrasound scan, a mere 15 months after Wosler’s technology was conceived. This innovation enabled high-quality diagnostic ultrasounds to be performed remotely, with the SonoBot located in Wabasca, Alberta, over 3500 km from the sonographer in London, Ontario. This marked a significant milestone as Canada's first long-distance teleoperated ultrasound scan with real-time haptic feedback. Later in the year, the focus shifted to Autonomous Intelligence and the Deep Space Healthcare Challenge. Wosler introduced an advanced version of the SonoBot, capable of operating in low-connectivity areas, including spacecraft on deep-space missions. This robot demonstrated the ability to autonomously manipulate the transducer for safe ultrasound procedures, as showcased in a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) scan on a phantom appendage. The robot’s self-assessment capabilities and 3D reconstruction of thrombi underscored its potential.
After such a successful 2022, 2023 did not disappoint! 2023 was a year of commercial product development, not just prototypes. The team was incredibly successful in the complete overhaul of our SonoStation and SonoLink components.
The primary goal for the whole year was to explore every nook and cranny of our prototype software in SonoStation and SonoLink, optimize it and reconstruct it into rock-solid modules. Turning 5,000+ lines of spaghettified code, where every bug is a needle-in-a-haystack, into over 50,000 lines of concrete, bullet-proof, intentionally designed modules. This doesn’t even include the last component of the SonoSystem, the SonoBot, which will follow suit at the turn of the year!
The Wosler SonoStation was our highest priority this year since it is the only part of the system that can be continuously improved with active sonographer feedback. We performed two usability studies so far, one this year. From these studies, we were able to capture highly valuable feedback which paved the path for current and future optimizations. First and foremost, we abandoned the development of our own custom haptic motion controller and decided to commit to a tried and true haptic robot provider. The addition of the Haply Inverse3 to replace our Rev 4 input device accelerated our development to a pace we have never seen before. The Inverse3 offers the best form factor, haptic sensitivity, adjustability, and overall sleekness that is unmatched by anything else in the industry. It is tremendously easy to develop with; in only a handful of weeks, we completely switched away from Rev4 with drastic performance improvements. This switch was instrumental for the Wosler development roadmap. It allowed us to remain lean on Wosler technology team members and focused exclusively on 1s and 0s, instead of the design, manufacturing and assembly of a completely separate robotic system. We are proud to say that we have officially locked in the motion controller component of Wosler SonoStations, with no major hardware, software or firmware changes left for the rest of technology development.
Showcasing our product has been a recurring theme this year! With each visual improvement to our SonoSystem, we are always gearing up for the next high-stakes presentation. This year we accomplished over 20 successful major demos—including 10 cross-continental ones with round-trip data paths extending as much as 10,000 km. This year we were able to put our technology in the hands of top-of-the-food-chain OEM ultrasound providers, with high hopes for big partnerships.
The team operates on an Agile development methodology, where several small development tasks are started and closed every sprint. With this framework, incremental improvements are made and released to the full system every two weeks. The above figure shows the accumulation of “sprint points” which denote the amount of effort each minor task requires. To bring your attention to the uptick in the 4th quarter, the team's seen some recent productivity acceleration in the first week of November and is showing to be sustaining a higher development pace each sprint. This was made possible with the recent workflow and project management improvements, and the team buckling down extra hard in preparation for several 4th quarter, and New Year demos.
Recently the team has started preparing for the commercialization of the product including the regulatory component that comes with it. The team made a switch to a new cloud-based QMS provider, with foresight against the daunting Health Canada, and FDA submissions. We nearly completed the phase one steps of QMS setup, building and onboarding. Much more to come in 2024; including procedure, product, risk management, and other important documentation. This will open the door for Wolser to get an ITA approval, which can enable us to do in-person trials and further evaluate the SonoSystem.
Wosler has been incredibly fortunate to have hired or partnered with these absolute rockstars for the technology team: Matthew Da Silva, Bryan Lee, Jimmy Bright, Shreyas Lackshminarayan, James Hunter, Yue Zhou and Jai Sood. Each one takes on new challenges with stride, motivated by conquering hard and daunting work, and moving mountains with their unbelievable talent. Without this team, Wosler would not be anywhere as successful as it is today. It is both astounding and humbling to look back over these short 30 months and see the progress we’ve made and the hurdles we’ve overcome. I am very excited to see what 2024 holds.

Industry Stats: Addressing Labour Availability Challenges
Labour Shortages and Rising Wages: The sonography field is experiencing labour shortages due to increased demand, leading to rising wages. As of 2022, the median annual wage was around $81,350.
Technological Advances: Significant advancements include the teleoperation of ultrasound machines, allowing remote operation, and more portable, cost-effective equipment.
Shifts in Care Delivery: Sonography is increasingly used in ambulatory, home, and virtual care settings, integrating AI and digital technologies for efficiency.
Workforce Management: Some strategies focus on workload management, specialized training and education and the adoption of telemedicine to allow efficient workforce management. These developments are shaping healthcare's future, with sonography at the forefront of these changes.
A Word from the CSO
We completed our second usability study, with a cohort of 7 sonographers, to compare our SonoSystem to free-hand ultrasound on a deep-vein-thrombosis phantom. On average, sonographers measured the blood clot within 0.1 cm of the free-hand equivalent without increasing the scan time. The sonographers positively received the system and reinforced the need for this type of technology. The results from this study were presented at RSNA, more details on this are in the Events section. We have used these results to further optimize our system, and we are gearing up to perform another usability test in early 2024.
We have formed a strategic partnership with the Remote Presence Lab run by Dr. Mendez out of the University of Saskatchewan for clinical and system evaluation. They will be assisting with the evaluation of the technology as well as the clinical trial. They have experience with robotic system evaluation and performed the Canadian clinical trial for AD EchoTech’s MELODY system. We are looking forward to all the progress this collaboration will bring.
We have also submitted a few grants over the past year. We submitted two applications to the Models of Care Innovation Fund partnering with London Health Sciences, The Michener Institute of Education at UHN, and Pikangikum First Nation. We also submitted an application to the Digital Super Cluster co-funding opportunity in collaboration with Haply Inc. We are excited to see what opportunities and funding these applications may bring. We aim to submit more grant applications in 2024.
